The impressive Heywards Royal Oak hotel was first licensed in 1848 and the main building was completed in 1873. Its Victorian architecture is typical of the era with superb stonework, impressive arches, wide cornices, ornate fireplaces and balcony latticework.
Many famous Coonawarra wine labels including Wynns, Katnook, Bowen, Rymill, DiGiorgio, Redman and Zema to name a few are based in the Penola district and visitors frequent the town each year from all over Australia and overseas to enjoy fine wines as well as to investigate the history of the township.
Penola was once the home of ‘Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop’ and evidence of her association with the town is on display including the Woods Mackillop Schoolhouse and Saint Josephs Church.
Owners John & Libby Heyward have operated the hotel together since 1988 although John took over the running of the hotel in 1966 after his father passed away suddenly. After a lifelong association with the hotel and the hospitality industry they have decided to sell the hotel and retire.
